Heartwood Haven, an animal sanctuary, embarked on an emergency rescue after the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon confiscated 71 pigs and 16 goats following felony cruelty charges in January. ROY, Wash. — In the nearly six years she’s spent rescuing them, Kate Tsyrklevich has learned a lot about pigs. “They’re very social,” she said. “They’re like humans. They like contact and comfort. They breathe their hot breath on you and let you know what they had for breakfast.”

Since its inception in 2017, Heartwood Haven, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and registered charity on the Key Peninsula, has rescued more than 1,400 farm animals suffering from cruelty and neglect, including pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys.
